Hurd backs new online gift aid system

Written by Isabel Griffith

The minister for civil society has stated that the future of the gift aid system lies online.

In an announcement that could change the face of charity fundraising, Nick Hurd commented that the current system is archaic and must be updated for the 21st century, Third Sector reports.

Speaking at the launch of a report on digital giving by ResPublica, the minister said the report will be given "full consideration" by the Gift Aid Forum, which is set to meet tomorrow (September 9th).

John Low, chief executive of the Charities Aid Foundation, told the news source that young people are increasingly using the internet as a charity fundraising tool and that this must be supported by an online gift aid system.

He added that with government backing, a new system could encourage more people to make regular donations to charity.

Currently, the basic rate tax is 20 per cent, meaning that a donation of £10 is worth £12 to a recipient charity.ADNFCR-1578-ID-800056499-ADNFCR
